Neo-fascism gaining control in the country, says M.V. Govindan

Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State general secretary M.V. Govindan said here on Tuesday that neo-fascism was spreading its tentacles fast across the world. Attempts in India to destabilise constitutional bodies and federalism were part of neo-fascism, he said in his inaugural address at a seminar organised by the Kerala High Court committee of the All India Lawyers Union as part of the 50th year of the Emergency. He alleged that there were attempts in India to even curb the independent functioning of the judiciary. The moves by the Centre to impose restrictions on States were against federalism, he said. Mr. Govindan said society needed to realise that neo-fascism was gaining control in the country. Efforts by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to implement the Hindutva agenda should be opposed, he said. Advocate Thomas Abraham, who was arrested during the Emergency, was felicitated on the occasion. K. Gopalakrishna Kurup, Advocate General, inaugurated a media exhibition held as part of the event.

M.A. Baby reveals the only time when Sitaram Yechury overruled CPI(M)‘s diktat

Sitaram Yechury, the late former general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], was known to be a stickler for party discipline. He, however, often disobeyed the party's diktat on only one thing: quitting smoking. This was revealed by Yechury's successor and the CPI(M)'s current general secretary M.A. Baby at an event in Kozhikode on Saturday (June 28, 2025), while releasing a book on his late comrade. 'We have often urged Yechury to stop smoking. Brinda Karat had even got angry with him on the issue. The party polit bureau passed a resolution to this effect as well. Yechury, who otherwise stuck to party discipline, used his power as the general secretary to veto this,' Mr. Baby said in a lighter vein. The CPI(M) leader also recalled how Yechury was planning to quit smoking during his final days at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. 'His life partner, Seema Chishti, once asked us at the hospital why don't your party tell him to stop this habit. We told her we have raised a similar demand multiple times. Hearing our conversation, Yechury said he would definitely quit smoking once he was out of the hospital. However, we could not see him keeping his promise,' Mr. Baby said. Describing Yechury as a Marxist with a keen interest in multiple subjects, Mr. Baby said that he always tried to gain an in-depth knowledge in all of them. Yechury was never a 'jack of all trades, but master of none.' 'E.M.S. Namboodiripad was known for his vast knowledge on many subjects. But, he never took interest in things such as sports. Yechury was deeply interested in such subjects as well. I remember the morning conversations we have had after watching tennis legend Roger Federer's late night matches,' he recalled. Sitaram Yechury (1952-2024): Life and times in pictures Mr. Baby released the book titled Adhunika Communist: Sitaram Yechuryude Jeevitha Katha (Modern Communist: The life story of Sitaram Yechury) by handing over a copy to author K.R. Meera. It has been edited by veteran journalist P.P. Aboobacker. Kozhikode Deputy Mayor C.P. Musafir Ahmed and writers N.P. Hafiz Mohammed and K.P. Ramanunni, among others, were present.

V.S. Achuthanandan, former Kerala CM and Communist veteran, suffers heart attack

V.S. Achuthanandan, former Kerala Chief Minister and veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], was hospitalised around 10 a.m. on Monday (June 23, 2025) at SUT Hospital at Pattom in Thiruvananthapuram following a heart attack. He is 101 years old. Hospital sources said Mr. Achuthanandan has been admitted to the ICU and that his current condition was stable. Popularly known as 'VS', Mr. Achuthanandan turned 101 on October 20, 2024. Mr. Achuthanandan had been a towering and fiery presence in Kerala politics for decades. Mr. Achuthanandan was born into a family of agricultural workers at Punappara in Alappuzha in 1923. In 1964, Mr. Achuthanandan left the Communist Party of India's (CPI) national council to become one of the founding members of the breakaway CPI(M). The Punnapra-Vayalar uprising, often called Kerala's October Revolution, against the Travancore Diwan's bid to self-rule and to follow the American model of governance led to a mass uprising in which he was tasked with working underground to organise people. But he was arrested in Poonjar and subjected to the worst custodial torture at the Pala police station.

CPI(M) calls for anti-war rallies across Kerala against Israeli attacks on Iran

The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in Kerala on Tuesday called for holding anti-war rallies and anti-imperialist programmes across the State on Tuesday and Wednesday against the alleged U.S.-backed Israeli aggression in Iran. The party said that Israel's actions had turned West Asia into a battlefield and created a fear of war in the world. The CPI(M), in its statement, also highlighted the plight of the people in Palestine and alleged that India was consenting to the attacks on them by remaining silent on the issue. In its statement, the Left party accused Israel of adopting a policy of invading a sovereign State and destroying all its systems.
